About the Artist-Susan J. Kelley

Bio

I was born Susan Jane Rannikko in  Massachusetts and have lived in Connecticut since 1976. I am told I showed creative talents at the age of 3 when I drew a recognizable cat. I sold my first piece of artwork at 10 years old and have been creating paintings and crafts ever since. My work is held by people worldwide under the surnames of Rannikko, Nicholson, Kelley and as of January 2000, simply SuKelley.

In 1995, I was offered an early retirement which gave me an opportunity to become a fulltime artist. Mostly self-taught, I paint representational work in media of pastels, oils, acrylics and watercolors. Most of my work consists of seascapes and landscapes of Connecticut. I accept commissions to do portraits, murals and favorite scenes.

In the summer of 1998, I donated my time to paint an 8' x 16' mural for the Town of Branford on a firewall located across from the town green. I have painted murals for the Knights of Columbus in Guilford, Ct, Hennessey's Pub formerly of New Haven, Ct and The Holiday Inn in Worcester, Massachusetts. My work can be seen at the Wall Street Gallery in Madison, Ct, at area shows and exhibitions and by appointment in my studio in Branford. I also will consider private art lessons in my studio , call for info at 203-481-6500

I also now have my paralegal certificate. I cannot give legal advice but I am available to area lawyers for part-time legal work. I also have my notary public.

Artist Statement

I paint realistic representations of our natural environment which I believe is a part of our larger existence. I believe connection with the greater whole makes us more complete. Painting and living across from Long Island Sound makes that connection for me and I hope that my paintings share that connection with others. I use various media because I feel my subject matter dictates the medium I will use as they all create different moods and feelings. My favorite subject to paint is water; the translucency, depth and movement are a challenge to recreate. I also enjoy painting local scenes, people and still lifes. I am thankful for this time in my life I have to paint.
